DescriptionMoving from lighting up small LEDs to driving high-torque DC motors requires a fundamental shift in how you handle power. Standard Bipolar Junction Transistors (BJTs like the 2N2222) quickly overheat when pushed past 1 Amp. The 50N06 N-Channel MOSFET is a voltage-controlled, high-current solid-state switch that allows you to effortlessly control up to 50 Amps of current using rapid digital signals.Whether you are designing a custom PWM speed controller for an electric scooter or building a high-wattage heated bed for a 3D printer, the 50N06 provides reliable, heavy-duty power switching.Driving the Gate (Crucial Design Note)MOSFETs operate completely differently from standard transistors; they are controlled by voltage, not current. While a 5V signal from an Arduino can technically turn this MOSFET on partially, the 50N06 is considered a “Standard Level” MOSFET. To achieve its massive 50A rating and ultra-low internal resistance, the Gate-to-Source voltage (VGS) needs to be pushed up to 10V.If you are driving heavy loads using a 3.3V or 5V microcontroller, it is highly recommended to use a dedicated MOSFET gate driver IC or a smaller intermediary transistor to hit the gate with 10V to 12V. This ensures the MOSFET fully saturates and stays cool.Thermal Management & The TO-220 PackageThe 50N06 is housed in a rugged TO-220 package featuring a large metallic backplate with a mounting hole. The internal resistance (RDS(on)) is incredibly low (only 22 milliohms), meaning it wastes very little power as heat under moderate loads. However, if you plan to push more than 5 to 10 Amps of continuous current through it, you must bolt a metal heatsink down onto that silver tab. Without a heatsink, the internal silicon will exceed its thermal limits and fail.Inductive Loads and Flyback ProtectionIf you are using this MOSFET to drive inductive loads—like DC motors, mechanical relays, or solenoids—you must install a flyback diode (like the 1N4004 or 1N4007) across the load. Motors generate massive high-voltage spikes the moment they are turned off, which can punch right through the MOSFET’s silicon and destroy it instantly if not safely shunted away.Key Features:Ultra-Low On-Resistance: Minimizes power dissipation and heat generation during high-current operation.High Switching Speed: Perfect for high-frequency PWM applications like dimming massive LED light bars or precise motor speed control.Avalanche Tested: 100% avalanche tested from the factory, ensuring rugged performance against voltage spikes.Technical Specifications:Part Number: FQP50N06 (or equivalent 50N06)Drain-Source Voltage (VDSS): 60V MaxContinuous Drain Current (ID): 50A MaxPulsed Drain Current (IDM): 200A MaxGate-Source Voltage (VGSS): ±25V MaxStatic Drain-Source On-Resistance (RDS(on)): ~0.022Ω (at VGS = 10V)Maximum Power Dissipation (PD): 120W (with adequate heatsinking)Operating Junction Temperature (TJ): -55°C to 175°CPackage Form: TO-220ABIdeal Applications:High-power DC motor speed controllers (PWM)Switching 12V/24V high-wattage LED strips and arraysCustom DC-DC boost and buck convertersDriving solenoids and high-current mechanical relays
